How I Decided to Make this Puff Pastry Appetizer Recipe 🙂
Truth be told, I really had no intention of making a Genoa Salami easy puff pastry appetizer recipe – It just kind of happened! I was making some gizdodo vol au vent appetizers when I realized I had some leftover puff pastry rounds that I needed to make use of.
For those who do not know, in order to make vol au vent cases (aka puff pastry cups), you need to stack a square piece of puff pastry with a circle cut-out from the middle, on top of a solid square piece of puff pastry before baking. (See the image below). As you’ll notice in the image below, after creating the cases, I was left with puff pastry rounds I had cut out with a cookie cutter. I scoured my fridge for some possible toppings, and the idea for an easy puff pastry appetizer recipe was born.
How to make this Genoa Salami Puff Pastry Appetizer Recipe
Genoa Salami – This is one of my favorite types of salami to use whenever I make homemade pizza. Dice the Genoa salami into small pieces for this puff pastry appetizer recipe.
Onion – I felt that adding some onions to the Genoa/cheese filling would enhance the flavor of the puff pastry appetizers – and I was not wrong. You will need to dice the onions finely for this recipe
Shredded Cheese – For this recipe, I decided to use some mozzarella cheese. You can use whatever kind of cheese you have at home.
Puff Pastry – You can either make the puff pastry at home as I did, or you can buy your puff pastry from the store. You’ll need to roll out the puff pastry and then cut out 1.5″ diameter circles with a cookie cutter. Place the pastry puff rounds on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Method: Preheat the oven to 350F. In a bowl, mix together the diced Genoa salami, diced onions and, shredded cheese, then set aside. Using a spoon, push into the center of the puff pastry rounds, to make a shallow well. Brush the puff pastry rounds lightly with some egg wash. Place some of the Genoa salami filling in the center of the pastry puff rounds. Bake for 10-15 mins in the preheated oven until cooked.
